The methods and bias of the media || kuro5hin.org

Myanmar | The mess that the army has made | Economist.com

this is probably useful for GP. somehow. it's interesting at any rate, for the following reasons:
a) myanmar is due to assume the presidency of ASEAN soon; it's rather awkward to have a pariah government presiding over ASEAN
b) there's this woman, she's kept in isolation all the time because she has Things To Say, her name is Aung San Suu Kyi, which is not pronounced like how it looks
c) if you think we've got it tough, the burmese have got it worse. Really.

claud: on missing people, the media and caring. also obligatory gay link.
F--- Natalee Holloway || kuro5hin.org

let me give you a bit of a backgrounder: this girl named Natalee Holloway has been making all the major American news networks lately for going missing in Aruba.

the article I have linked to basically puts forth the view that she does not deserve the amount of coverage and funding that she is getting in the search effort to locate her. whether or not you agree with this, of course, is entirely up to you; but remember your Hardy: amid the prostration of the larger animal species an unseen insect world was busy in all the fullness of life.

is a tragedy that is not yours worth your time?

a little belated, but you all might like to know.

bugfixed the template, although this is just a temporary respite, smaller resolutions may have problems but links and tag should work. incidentally, it's rather telling that 1b's blog is more active than ours, although I suppose this is likely to be because I have only just installed my blogthis and am actually logging into blogger these days.
